Marine ecosystems contain a variety of natural and anthropogenic products whose impact remains unclear. Toxicological experiments are a first step in assessing the impact of these products on marine ecosystems or to investigate the potential of new natural products.

In vitro experiments with human or fish cell lines provide a robuust and animal-friendly alternative to in vivo studies on laboratory animals.

We provide access to in vitro facilities with different types of human and fish cell lines available for use.

UGent - Laboratory of Environmental Toxicology and Aquatic Ecology

The Ghent University Laboratory for Environmental Toxicology (GhEnToxLab) has a strong background in marine research, focussing on ecological and ecotoxicological approaches to assess potential impacts on marine ecosystems. GhEnToxLab is a leading expert on microplastics research in the marine environment. The group offers state-of-the-art facilities for microplastic research, including imaging facilities. GhEnToxLab also has expertise in vitro testing with cell lines as an animal friendly research approach to assess effects of natural and anthropgenic products in the marine environment.
